Ian Mortensen is a drummer/percussionist currently based in Chicago. He grew up in Cedarville, Ohio, where he picked up the drums in the fifth grade. In high school he began studying with Dayton based drumset extraordinaire Jim Leslie, with whom he continued his studies at the University of Dayton. In 2017 he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music and has since worked as a freelance musician primarily in the Dayton area.

 

Recently he has performed with the Dayton Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz Central Big Band, Dave Greer's Classic Jazz Stompers, the Sinclair Community Jazz Ensemble, Wild Note Jazz Quartet, and the Cincinnati Tradition Drum and Bugle Corps (2017 DCA Class A World Champions), and he has also on occasion performed with his own trio and featured his own original compositions. In April of 2017, he released his first jazz recording as a leader, titled Greatest Hits, which features several of his original compositions and can be found on major streaming services.
